Excellent Forex Education and Online Trading

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Over the last couples of weeks, while I was going through some struggles in life, I spent some of my time reading and studying forex trading materials. I read books, e-books, watched educational videos about online forex trading and also practiced live online trading. It was a serious topic and not a good one to read you might say, but I thank my mentors who are providing me with excellent forex education and making online forex trading simpler, less complicated, fun and exciting as well for me :)

I mentioned in my October post that forex trading, or currency trading, is one of the vehicles I learned from the Money Summit Cebu 2011 to make massive money, which I seriously wanted to pursue. It was presented by Mark So of Forex Club Asia. Forex market was not completely a new topic for me. I had exchanged some currencies on several occasions before when I traveled to other countries. However, I never have had any experience when it comes to online forex trading. However, Mark So's presentation was very educating and inspiring. While I knew forex market carries high level of risk, it did not deter me from trying it out. So immediately I signed up and opened a forex trading account with Forex Club Asia. Membership is FREE and no commitment at all. Now I am learning and receiving FREE excellent forex education from Forex Club Asia. I feel so blessed to have a mentor like Mark So. He has wealth of experiences and successes in online forex trading, making him a highly-recognized master forex trader in the Philippines. Since this opportunity is FREE, I thought I would like to share this information to you, so you could benefit from this also.

What is Forex Trading?

Forex trading also known as foreign exchange or currency trading is one of the largest markets in the world. According to statistics, forex trading makes up 95% of total foreign exchange transactions, while currency conversions (or exchanges) only comprise 5% of the forex market. Daily trade volume in the forex market reaches over $4trillion.  Forex market is a highly regulated market in the world, and major players in the forex market include central banks, commercial and investment banks, trading institutions, hedge funds, corporations and individual investors.

Unlike stock market where stocks certificates or shares are traded, in forex market currencies are being traded. That is why in forex market, currencies are always traded in pairs. One currency is compared against another currency. Forex traders earn or make profit by speculating on the value of one currency against another currency, say PhP/USD or EUR/USD. The value of one currency can increase in value (appreciate) or decrease in value (depreciate) relative to another currency. Movements in currency values offer forex traders opportunities to generate massive profits.

Advantages and Benefits of Forex Trading

Forex trading offers many benefits and advantages. Here are some of the benefits why forex trading is popular:

  • Forex market is really big and offers more trade and profit opportunities.  The daily trade volume of forex market is over $4 trillion, while stocks and bond markets daily volume are only billions of dollars.    This huge trade volume provides traders opportunity to generate massive profits.
  • 24-hour market. Unlike stock market where trading hours are fixed, for instance, in Philippine Stock Exchange, trading hours take place between 9AM to 12PM, Monday to Friday except holidays, forex market is open 24-hours. This gives you the freedom to trade anytime of the day. Forex market also gives you the ability to trade almost any currency!
  •  Leverage. Forex trading gives higher leverage even with small amount of capital. As such, it provides traders with more opportunities to generate nice profits. It also gives traders flexibility to keep their risk capital to a minimum. In Forex Club Asia, you can trade for as low as USD300 only.

However, as a caveat, forex trading can be extremely risky. While forex trading can generate massive profits, the chance also to lose part or all your capital, is very high. Good thing is, in Forex Club Asia, you are with the community of forex traders where you will be taught how you can take precautions to minimize the impact or losses in forex trading. Your mentors will teach you the skills you need to manage your trading risks. Whether you are a beginner in forex trading or seasoned forex trader, you will never trade alone with Forex Club Asia. I am enjoying my experience with Forex Club Asia, that is why, I can't help but share this opportunity with you.

Please do not miss this rare opportunity. To know more about forex trading and get excellent forex education and online trading tips for FREE, you can click here to visit the website of Forex Club Asia and join us for FREE.

Breaking the Long Silence

Saturday, November 5, 2011

It is almost one (1) month or twenty-eight (28) days to be exact, since I made my last post. So all of you who have either followed me, visited or checked my blog might be wondering what have happened to me. The last few weeks were kind of chaotic, and definitely not one of the best days of my life :( .Well, many good things happened to me and for which I was grateful, but some bad ones as well.

Pressures from work, personal and family issues all combined together. They all came almost at the same time. As a result, I was discouraged, felt depressed and lethargic. I was not in the best condition and I did not have the courage and motivation to write. I was kind of dragging myself every single day. I was in limbo. I was just 'managing myself', to borrow it from my former Nigerian colleagues who used it to describe a pathetic situation.

At least I know, just like the others, I am normal. Since, I know we all go through this phase in life once in a while. It is only a question of when. I do not want to elaborate on the details what happened or what I went through during the last four (4) weeks here. But that should give you an idea why I have not been able to update this blog of mine.

Now I have recovered from the dumps, and gradually getting back to my normal self and routine. Thanks to those friends who have been with  me and prayed for me.

My blog is about nine (9) months already, and it has evolved from its humble beginnings. I still feel passionate about sharing topics on personal finance, investments and financial literacy and sharing my experiences in online business. So this blog will continue to focus on that theme. However, I also feel I should re-design the lay-out, look and appearance of this blog, so please expect some changes in the coming days.

Thanks for bearing with me. I promise to update my blog and share interesting articles for you.

God bless :)

PayPal Online Payment Facility

Sunday, October 9, 2011

If you want to engage in online business,or to shop online, you will need an online payment facility to process payments of your transactions. One way of doing this is to use credit card, or you deposit money to the account of the seller if you are in the Philippines (which I did before). However, this procedure takes much of the time, and showing your bank account or using credit card will also expose your personal and financial details which can put you at greater security risks. To avoid these problems and enjoy the convenience of online shopping and the ability to send and receive money with ease worldwide, you can use PayPal online payment facility which is now available in the Philippines.

What is PayPal?

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

PayPal is a leading online payment facility which started in 1998. It operates in 190 countries and regions, with over 250 million registered users and 230 million accounts. It is available in 24 currencies, which enables individuals and businesses worldwide to send and receive money online, sell online, shop and pay online. It has a wide network of accredited stores including eBay, Barnes and Noble, Apple iTunes, The Sharper Image, B&H Photo Video, among others.

Why Use Paypal?

Paypal   has a lot of advantages than using your credit cards. It is the safest way to send or receive money, or to pay. PayPal can be used with MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express cards. When you use PayPal, you do not expose your credit card and other financial information to merchants and other third-parties. PayPal acts as the intermediary between you, your bank and the merchants. Thus, your personal and financial information is protected. All you have to do is log-in to your account in PayPal, and just make a few clicks. It is like you are doing Internet banking.

Opening a PayPal account is FREE. All you need to have is your credit card or bank account. In my case, I created my own account last January 2011.  Then I linked it to my UnionBank Visa credit card and eon account, a debit card which is an internet-based deposit account product of Union Bank. I am now making the full use and power of my PayPal account. Thanks to the training support I receive from Eireen Diokno-Bernardo, an e-bay power seller and  an e-commerce specialist from the Philippines.

For more information about PayPal, you can visit the PayPal website.

To also help you get started, I put together a simple tutorial about how to create an account with PayPal. I took some of the illustrations in the tutorial from my PayPal account. However, if you feel you need more training to navigate the PayPal online payment facility, I encourage you to attend an interactive PayPal 101 workshop.

We Can Earn Three Types of Income

Sunday, October 2, 2011

My friends together with our mentor, Eireen  Diokno Bernardo

For two days, I took a break from my work and joined a special community of people who wanted to learn how to make massive passive income. Yes, you read it right ! I attended the first ever Money Summit and Wealth Expo Cebu 2011 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. Barely three hundred (300) people including entrepreneurs, business owners, investors, and employees participated in the Money Summit. To my personal opinion, the summit was a tremendous success. I learned new and specific ways to make more money from fourteen (14) great and wonderful money gurus. Ways that really work because they do it themselves and have seen tremendous results. They taught us that it is possible to earn three types of income all at the same time to fast track our journey to financial freedom.

Three Types of Income

During the Money Summit, each money guru, most of whom came from Manila, presented each specific way to make massive money.  They showed that if we change our mindset, apply any or all of those ways and focus on what we do best, it is really possible to earn three types of income: earned income, portfolio income and passive income. While one type of income can be preferred over another, each type of income is needed to help us achieve financial freedom and more choices in our life. Let me share with you more of what I learned from the Money Summit by looking at different types of income.

Earned Income. This is the income that we obtain from working for someone or company. This is income from active work, like our salary or hourly employment. Earned income is based on our time, effort and skill. Some activities that provide us earned income include:

  • Having a job
  • Providing consultancy services
  • Operating a business
  • Working as virtual assistant, and
  • Other activities that require our time and effort

Earned income is limited. It is a function of the time, skills and effort we provide. We are working for the money. If we do not work, we may not earn the income. Sometimes even if we work harder and yet we do not feel we are properly compensated. This is the type of income most people earn because this is the easiest to do and we prefer to be employees rather than business owners. This is not our fault because we were trained and programmed to be employees. But earned income is important because through this we are able to save up money which we can use for investments. It allows us to make the other two types of income.

Portfolio Income: It is income called capital gains. It is income we make from our investments by selling it at a higher price than we paid for it. It is making our money work for us. Some examples of investments that generate portfolio income include:

With Mark So, forex guru and founder of Forex Club Asia
  • Buying, flipping and leasing real estate properties (This is one of the ways I learn in the summit and I would like to pursue further)
  • Buying and selling stocks (and other paper assets like T-bills, bonds, mutual funds). This is one of the topics in the summit presented by a broker firm called Citiseconline. I have been into it for a few years already, but am still learning the tricks and rules of the game. I am using CitisecOnline as my online broker.
  • Online forex trading (or buying and selling foreign currencies through the Internet). This is also one of the topics in the summit which I really liked and enjoyed most. The presentation of Mark So of Forex Club Asia was very educating. I really got so excited that I signed up immediately. I invite you to join us also and get excellent forex education and online trading training for FREE. You can click here to join for FREE.
  • Buying and selling collectible items. You can buy old stuffs that have the potential to appreciate in value and sell it. This was discussed in the summit by Eireen Bernardo, who is an E-bay power seller and an E-commerce and Paypal specialist in the Philippines. She is my mentor in Paypal, which is a payment processor for E-commerce. I write more about Paypal in my next article.

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

Portfolio income is a good source of income because it is our money that works harder for us, and not we working for the money. However, it has also some drawbacks. To earn this type of income, first:

    • You need good knowledge and experience about how these investment vehicles work. You need to know how they work and how you can leverage on them. For instance, if you want to get involve in real estate, you need to learn what documentary evidence to look for, how to finance your investment, etc.
    • You need to use your money up front. You can not expect to earn this type of income if you do not have money or capital to use, even if that means small amount.
    • You do not have control over this type of income. Investing paper assets or real estate gives you little control over your investments. Your control is more on the buying and selling. It carries high risks but high returns as well.

Your financial knowledge and intelligence are important because they will make or unmake you rich! That is why it is important to invest in yourself through reading books, training and seminars to gain knowledge and experience how you can earn good portfolio income, and eventually helps you to earn the other important income, too.

Passive Income.  Passive income refers to income that's being derived from the assets and businesses that you have accumulated. It is income that comes to you without you working for it. Some examples of businesses that generate passive income include:

    • Income from rental properties like apartments, condominiums, etc. If these assets allow you to have excess money after paying for mortgage and other expenses. Excess money is considered passive income.
    • Income from Internet and multi-level marketing
    • Franchising
    • Royalty income (from books, patent, etc.)

This is the type of income that we all should be aiming for. Passive income has more advantages than the other two types of income because:

    • It gives us the time and money freedom. It requires little effort, and you can choose to "retire" early because the money keeps coming in month-after-month and year-after-year. You work for yourself, not for somebody else, and you can work according to your own schedule
    • You have more control over your investment. Because it is your business, you have influence over the operations and you can approximate the risks. For example, if you own a rental property, you have more control over your tenants, set the terms, and others.
    • Enjoy better tax privileges. Unlike earned and portfolio incomes, passive income enjoys better tax treatment. You earn and can spend your income first before tax is deducted. For other two types of income, tax is deducted first before you can spend the money.

I have benefited so much from the Money Summit 2011. Not only it enriched my financial knowledge, but it allowed me also to expand my network. Out of different ways to make money presented in the Money Summit, I have selected to focus into three investment vehicles to create three types of income: paper assets, Internet marketing and real estate.

In my next post, I will write more about principles and tips about investing and other instruments that we can use to make more money and achieve financial freedom.

6 Reasons Why Puerto Princesa Underground River Should Be Part of New 7 Wonders of Nature

    Thursday, September 15, 2011

Underground River is the Philippines' pride and the only nominee to the  New 7 Wonders of Nature. Located in Bgy. Sabang, 81 kilometers north of the center of Puerto Princesa City in the province of Palawan, the Underground River (also known as St. Paul  or Puerto Princesa Subteranean River National Park) is indeed a true wonder of nature and God's gift to mankind. Underground River deserves, in my unbiased opinion, to be included in the the top 7 Wonders of Nature.
Entrance to the Underground River cave

The Underground River Park has total land area of 22,202 hectares in which is nestled an 8.2 kilometers navigable underground river which runs beneath the limestone karst mountain that flows directly into the South China Sea. It is the longest underground river in Asia and second longest in the world. Inside the underground river are major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers that reach up to 60m high and 120m wide.

The La Venta Geographical Association,  a highly- respected group of Italian scientists and researchers, unearthed 6 main reasons why Puerto Princesa Underground River should be included in the  New 7 Wonders of Nature.

    1. Puerto Princesa Underground River represents one of the most largest and important underground estuaries of the world
    2. Puerto Princesa Underground River hosts one of the most complex cave systems in the world
    3. Puerto Princesa Underground River possesses very high amount of energy resulting from its unique thermal equator location, super marine climate and combination of wind, humidity and strong variable air fluxes that has the capacity to offset the effects of high-impact tourism. This characteristic makes Puerto Princesa Underground River naturally sustainable
    4. Puerto Princesa Underground River contains scientifically and aesthetically unique cave formations from secondary mineral deposits not found elsewhere
    5. Puerto Princesa Underground River hosts unique macro and micro cave formations that allow scientists to conduct studies on the relationship of tides and the speed of fresh water flow. These studies, which were never done before, will provide better understanding of our planet's evolution, and the most exciting reason is
    6. The discovery of a 20 million year-old fossil of sirenia or sea cow in a remarkably perfect condition embedded in the walls of Underground River. The specimen found is the first in the Philippines and in this part of the world!

For more information, details and explanations about the discoveries of the La Venta Group of the Underground River, please watch the video below and  click here to visit official website of the Underground River.

Watch live streaming video from ppurtv at livestream.com

I have visited Underground River a number of times already even before it became popular to tourists and caught the attention of the world. My first visit to Underground River was in the summer of 1996 with a group of fellow student writers from Palawan State University and College Editors Guild of the Philippines Southern Tagalog chapter. At that time, Underground River was unknown to the outside world except to few adventurous tourists, but the scale of scientific research activities by the scientists and conservation efforts by the City Government of Puerto Princesa, communities, and non-government organizations were already massive. Today, Underground River has become a major tourist attraction of Puerto Princesa City, and a model for effective protected area management in the Philippines.

Show Your Support to Puerto Princesa Underground River's Bid to the  New 7 Wonders of Nature

Please show your support for Puerto Princesa Underground River. It is now included in the top 14.  But we definitely need more of your votes to ensure that Underground River is included in the New 7 Wonders of Nature. There are 2 ways to show your support:

    1. You can vote through text or SMS by texting the keywords PPUR, PPUR7 & PPUR15 and send to 2861 ( valid for Sun, Globe and Smart networks). Online Advertising Alternatives to Google Adsense

    Saturday, September 10, 2011

Online advertising or advertising through the use of the Internet to appeal to customers is one major tool website publishers or bloggers use to make money online.  Currently, Google Adsense is the number one in online advertising. That is the reason why many publishers and bloggers (myself included) apply to Google Adsense program to be allowed to display targeted Google ads on their websites or blogs. Google Adsense provides a good stream of revenues for most publishers. Unfortunately, the terms of service (TOS) of Google Adsense especially for some countries including Philippines has been very strict and many publishers are rejected. I remember my mentor telling me that websites must be at least 6-months old or at least have 100 blog posts before it can be admitted in the Google Adsense program. For some publishers this tactic worked, but for others it did not work. Other publishers are accepted in Google AdSense in the first instance. In my case, my application for Google Adsense was denied 3 times already for reasons unclear to me. It cited different issues why application was denied. I tried to fix those issues they raised, but every time I re-applied another issues were given. So I quit, maybe it's not for me. Anyway, I have moved on already and I simply looked for other online advertising alternatives to Google Adsense.

My experience with Google Adsense led me to discover many online advertising alternatives to Google Adsense. Yes, there are actually many of them. However, I did not go check all these Google Adsense online advertising alternatives. I reviewed a number of them which I found quite really good. But some of the really good ones are only accepting publishers with high volume traffic and are not interested with small publishers. But there are other good online advertising programs that accept small publishers and have very user-friendly system.

Here are the few ones I have reviewed and tried so far, and I recommend. The good thing about these alternatives is that they are compatible with Google AdSense, so if you have Google AdSense now, you can also combine them to maximize your revenue-earning potential. Below are the ones I have tried and I will try to update this list of online advertising alternatives to Google Adsense once I have reviewed and tried the others as well.

    1. Chitika Online Advertising Network. Chitika is a data analytics company in the business of online advertising founded in 2003 and based in Massachusetts, USA. Chitika is a South-Indian language which means "snap of the fingers", which suggest how fast customers would be able to put up ads on their websites. Chitika introduced its online advertising service in January 2004.

Chitika, through its vast global network, enables advertisers and publishers to maximize yields in their online advertising campaigns. Processing of application is very fast and Chitika ad codes are easy to implement. For more information click here to visit Chitika website  or you can use the link below to sign up.

    Get Chitika Premium

    2. ExitJunction is another online advertising program alternative for Google AdSense. ExitJunction is an innovative, non intrusive, exit-traffic monetization solution. Non intrusive because ads are invisible and do not destroy the experience of your readers. Ads only appear when the visitors of your website hit the exit button and leave your site. What ExitJunction does is to convert exiting traffic into money, the first of its kind really! ExitJunction Ads can be used together with Google AdSense since the ads are not contextual. For  more information click here to visit the ExitJunction website. Or you can also sign up below.

ExitJunction.com - Make Money From Your Exit Traffic!

    3. AdBrite  is the next best alternative to Google Adsense, at least to my experience and I highly recommend it. You can run it with other ad networks and compatible with Google AdSense, too. It is easy, efficient and effective. Click here to visit the website of AdBrite and sign up.

    Automatic Way of Saving Money

    Thursday, September 8, 2011

Saving money is important to wealth generation and in our journey to financial freedom. If you want to achieve financial freedom, then you must decide to start saving money NOW while you are still actively working and and have the capacity to make money, and not LATER. I know it is not always easy to save money on a regular and consistent manner because of so many bills and expenses we need to take care of, unless we consider savings as an expense.

    Right Definition of Savings

One important tool to use to save money is to develop a budget that incorporates automatic saving plan. Most of us define savings this way: Savings = Income less Expenses. This means all our money or income goes first to other people. We pay other people first by spending our money for our living and other expenses like home amortization, credit card payments (a very expensive debt), entertainment, and all other types of living expenses. With this approach, we can only save if we have money left over, which is almost always the case no money is left over to save at the end.

However, the best way to look at savings is this way: Living Expenses = Income less Savings (and Tithes and Offering, if you believe in it). Well, I do that's why I included it. In this way, you are deducting your savings from your income and paying yourself first. This is now the money you set aside for your future needs, especially when you can no longer work, or when you are temporarily out of job, or in times of other emergencies. Decide what fraction of your income you wish to save regularly to cover for your future needs. Whatever money is left after deducting your savings can now be allocated to your living expenses. It is important that you keep a list of all your living expenses and compare it with your budget to help you stay within your budget.

    Saving Money Automatically

To help you develop your savings habits, first thing you need to do is to open a savings account. All banks including cooperatives offer savings account, but the bank I use and what I recommend is Bank of the Philippine Islands or BPI. The great thing about BPI is that it has wide array of savings account products you could choose from depending on your purpose and they help you to save money automatically. BPI has also a user-friendly online banking facility. At least to my experience compared with other banks.

Among the saving account products of BPI, one product that I like best and recommend for beginners is BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings. If you do find saving money regularly and consistently a bit of a challenge, you should opt for automatic savings account. This kind of savings account help you to save money the easy way. With BPI Save Up Automatic Savings, you can develop your savings habits automatically.  What's even more appealing is that it's a combination of savings with life insurance coverage. All you have to do is open a BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings account with any BPI branch nearest you. It does not require an initial deposit, with a required minimum monthly balance of only P1000.00. BPI Save-Up Automatic Savings account comes with ATM card and an info card for your savings account, which is a sub-account to your savings account.  Next is you need to determine the amount of money you wish to save and its frequency. You will indicate upon opening an account how often and the amount you want to save which the bank will then automatically save for you. It's automatic transfer into your savings account. You can decide to save every pay day or whatever time interval you wish. Just tell your bank and they will do it for you for FREE! You can monitor your savings as it grows through the BPI online banking facility.

    Developing Saving Habits

Developing your savings habits does not happen overnight. It takes some time, but the point is, it is possible. Do not be discouraged. If you do not have much money to save and your budget is tight, that is fine. You can start small, maybe five percent or more of your income. It may not be significant and that means longer time for you to accumulate a sizable amount of savings. The point is for you to save money, even if small. The key to saving money and developing your saving habits is to do it consistently.  And you can use the automatic savings account to help you on that. Once you become used to it and gain a better handle of your finances, you can gradually increase the amount you save. You can always adjust the amount of money to save save by advising your bank. Saving money will take time, what is more important is you save and  save consistently.

    Simple Steps to Saving Money

    Monday, August 29, 2011

    http://www.flickr.com/photos
In my last post, I wrote about the importance of
saving money where I shared with you four Biblical principles that teach the value of saving money. Now I will write about the the how to saving money. I share some tips how to you can save money, and save money consistently :)

Much of what I write here are based on my personal money saving experiences. I find the how to saving money quite simple. If we just have to follow a few steps, we can begin to accumulate money in our bank account. I believe we all do save money at some point, but the big challenge always is how to save money consistently. Yes, the key to wealth creation is regular and consistent savings. Developing money saving habits are not easy because we, Filipinos, are generally spenders and not savers. For instance, our household savings rate was below 20%, one of the lowest in South East Asia. There are many other ways to save money, and if you do it consistently, you can accumulate savings for your protection against income shortfall in the future.

These are few simple steps you can use to save money and to develop your saving habits:

    1. Be Clear About Your Savings Objectives

Before you begin, it is important that you are clear with your saving objectives. What is it you want to be saving for? Write your objectives down and based your savings plan on what's most important to you. The better you understand your saving money objectives, the more you will be committed to implementing and following it through. Here are some you might be planning to save money for:

    • Retirement. This is one serious issue you need to think about and to be saving for while you are still actively working. This is part of being responsible. One way to do this is to contribute to your Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), if you are a government employee or open an account with Social Security System (SSS), if you are a private sector employee, business owner, self-employed or freelancer. I know the benefits you get from any of these social security programs are not much, but it can help. Another way to prepare for your retirement is opt for a life insurance policy. There are many types of life insurance products available in the market now that offer superior coverages for least amount of premiums. Some combine it with investments in mutual funds, others have endowment funds too. I'l write and recommend some of the best insurance companies and products in my future posts.
    • Emergencies. You may also need to set aside money for emergencies. Anything can happen at any time, and if you do not have funds for emergencies, it can be too much of a headache for you. Some financial advisers I talked to suggest to set aside money for emergencies at least six times of your monthly income.
    • Health. Another important item you should not miss is to save for health or medical needs. Getting sick and hospitalized is very expensive nowadays. The cost of hospitalization, medicines, laboratories and doctor's fees can really drain our money away. One option to ease your burden is to be a member of and contribute to our national health insurance program or PhilHealth. Whether you are formally employed or self-employed, you can contribute to PhilHealth and you and your family will be covered. PhilHealth benefits can really help a lot in times of medical emergencies. You can also supplement your PhilHealth coverage with private health insurance or HMO.
    • Play account. Of course, it is also important you save for leisure and relaxation.  Play account is the rich people way of saving for leisure. You are working so hard and you should reward yourself also. You should save money for holidays and vacations and others.
These are few examples you might need to be saving for. There are many more. For instance, if you are a parent, you need to save for your children's education. Young professionals need to save for their dream wedding, too :) and the list can go on.

    2. Set Specific Goals

Now that you are clear about what you want to be saving for, next step is to set specific goals. Fix the amounts you wish to have and set the exact dates you want your goals achieved. For instance, if you want to have a holiday, ask yourself, when is it exactly you want to be able to enjoy your holiday? How much money do you need for the holiday to enjoy? You can set the amounts needed that are most realistic to you, and the dates that are most important and meaningful for you. You also need to prioritize your goals and think about what each of your goals will cost you. You might need to do some research to figure out how much money you will need, or you can seek out the help of other people. But please do not burden yourself with complicated calculations. Be simple as possible. What is important is that you are able to figure the estimated costs for each of your goals.

    3. Developing a Budget

According to Robert Kiyosaki, knowing how to budget our money is one of the important financial intelligences we have to master. How to save money is to develop a budget that incorporates savings into it. A budget, according to one definition is: a systematic plan for the expenditure of a fixed resource over a given period. We can use the budget to make saving money automatic by incorporating it in the plan. The best way to do that is to treat your regular savings as an expense in your budget. If you treat saving money as an expense say every month, then you will have to pay for it. You are paying yourself first. If you do it this way, chances are you can save money regularly. You have a choice to use your budget to create saving or not.  For instance, in my case, this is how I structure my budget plan: Total income from all sources less tithes (I believe in tithing so it's on top of my list), savings (broken down by type of savings) and living expenses. In this case, I pay myself first, then I work around the remaining money to develop my living expenses budget. I started doing this a long time ago, this has worked pretty well for me.

I agree saving money that way is not easy at the beginning. It's really a struggle and it takes a lot of discipline to sustain it. But if you stick to it long enough, you can develop in due time better money management skills and money saving habits as well.

If you have other ways of saving money, please feel free to share it here so that others can benefit as well from your experience. Your comments are definitely welcome :)

4 Reasons Why Saving Money is Important

    Wednesday, August 17, 2011

    http://www.flickr.com/photos

In my previous post, I mentioned that saving money or setting aside money for the future is one of the secrets to wealth creation. While this principle is recognized by many people, however, this is seldom strictly and religiously followed. I know many friends who struggle in their personal finances especially in saving their hard-earned money. Not because they do not have money to save, in fact, most of them earn significant and above average income every month, but simply because, according to them, they do not have enough money to save. Their case is more of lack of spending or budget plan, and setting their priorities clear, and not the lack of money to save.

There could be many reasons why saving money is important. Understanding the reasons is more important than knowing the how part to save money. The why is more important because it is your motivation that drives you to save money. It is the driving force, that leads you to act. The how is easy to learn and will follow once you are clear about the why. So for the meantime, let's talk about the why of saving money.

Like I said, there could be many reasons you can think of why saving money is important. Here I will share with you some Bible perspectives about money savings and its instruction on how we can best handle our finances. The Bible is rich in instructions and advice when it comes to the matter of finances.

God Wants us to be Good Stewards of His Provisions for us

Jesus tells us in Matthew 25:13-30 and Luke 19:11-27 a parable of the talents. The story is about a man who is preparing to leave for a journey and entrusts his wealth to the hands of his servants. He distributes his possessions according to each servant's ability.  He gave five talents to the first, two talents to the second, and one talent to the third servant. In this story, we see how the first two servants used the master's money. They invested the money they were provided with and made it grow. The other servant did not invest the money and simply hid it under the ground. He produced nothing for the master. Each servant made an accounting upon the return of their master. The first two servants were happy to report with their master how they were able to multiply the master's money. Both received a reward and commendation from the master as "well done thou good and faithful servants." Because they were faithful, reliable and proven to be capable by the master, they were given more responsibilities.

The fate of the third servant was different from the first two. Because he was not able to invest the money entrusted to him by the master and he did not make it grow, he received punishment rather than commendation from the master. He was rebuked as  being "wicked and lazy."  His master suffered loss because of his laziness and incompetence. The value of the his master's money must have declined due to inflation. As a result, the master took away his talent and gave it to the servant who was able to produce more.

God wants us to be good and faithful stewards of whatever it is He has given us, be it money, time and other things. Saving money is good stewardship and it pleases God. If God can trust us with little things, He will entrust to us more of His blessings just as He has promised in Luke 16:10, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much. And he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much."

Saving Money for Famine, Hard Times

Another important reason why we need to save money is to prepare for the famine and hard times to come. The Bible tells us that there are seasons of life. There will be a time of abundance and a time of lack. During periods of high economic growth, our life might be easy and we can live in abundance. However, in time of economic recession and depression (period of slow or negative economic growth), then life can be really difficult and devastating especially if we are unprepared. The season of life is definite but we do not know exactly when the time of lack and famine will come upon us. That is why when we are in abundance, we need to store up so that when the hard times come, we will be prepared to handle it and we will survive.  There is no better way to prepare for the hard times than to save money in time of abundance. Take these wise examples from the Bible which illustrates the value of saving money.

"Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer." (Proverbs 30:24-25)

"Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, o sluggard, when will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, so shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man (Proverbs 6:6-11)

The story of the ant tells us the lesson to be hard working and to always plan ahead. We should not be lazy. If we are lazy, then it's like we are expecting poverty to fall unto us. And in times of abundance, we should store up our supplies for the hard times to come. And to save money now for the challenging times ahead is a wise action to do.

Another example is the story of Joseph in Genesis. Their story also teaches us a lesson to plan ahead and how once can be used by God as a blessing for others.

"Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grains under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. Then that food shall serve as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine." (Genesis 41:34-36)

It is Foolish to Spend all our Money

Proverbs 21:20 tells us that it is foolish or unwise for us to spend all our money and use up everything that we have. We are certain that we will experience some period of abundance and also period of lack in our life. But we do not know when hard times and scarcity will come upon us. That is why the Bible warns us.

"The best food and olive oil are stored up in the houses of  wise people. But a foolish man eats up everything he has." Proverbs 21:10, NIRB)

If you spend everything that you earn every month, and do not save a fraction of what you earn, it can really be a serious problem for you especially in period of tough economic situation. But it is never late to start. Endeavor to pay yourself first, and also try to develop your spending and money saving plan. Try to start saving small money, say between 5-10 percent of your monthly income and stick to it, until it becomes part of your habits. Then gradually increase your savings rate to a level that is most comfortable to you. For tips about how to save money,  I will write about the how part of saving money in my next post.

Providing for our Family Needs is an Honorable Thing to do

"But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than the unbeliever." (1 Timothy 5:8, NKJV)

Another  reason why saving money is important is that we need to provide for our family needs. God looks at our ability to provide for our family as an honorable act. And if we don't provide, God sees it as a serious sin and an act of irresponsibility. God does not say that we provide the needs of our family only in time of abundance and in good times. But He expects us to provide for their needs at all times and in all seasons of life including in time of hard economic time. How prepared are you now?

We know there are seasons in life - time of abundance and time of lack. We do not know when the time of lack will come and what the future holds. Only God knows about that! But one thing we are sure about is the fact the God will provide everything that we need to survive. God might be abundantly blessing you today and providing you a means now to save for your tomorrow's needs. But if you will spend everything that God is providing you now, then you will not have for tomorrow. Learn from the story of the ants and Joseph. Start now to saving money. It is always best to plan ahead, and let us commit all our plans to God. The outcome is in God's hands.

Colayco Foundation Financial and Investing Literacy Program

    Friday, August 12, 2011

I attended a Pera Palaguin webinar conducted by Mr Francisco Colayco and Armand Bengco of the Colayco Foundation for Education, Inc. The webinar was very informative and insightful. It was a good learning experience with Mr Colayco and Mr Bengco who selflessly shared their knowledge and expertise about investing and the different ways where to invest our money in and how to make our money grow fast. But while I enjoyed everything about the webinar, there are a number of key principles Mr Colayco mentioned that really stuck in my mind and I would like to share with you.

According to Mr Colayco, we must feel the need for urgency to create wealth and to empower ourselves to  build our wealth. If we don't feel the urgency of our need, more likely we will never act and do something.  Wealth accumulation is not achieved overnight, but over time. And to build our wealth overtime, he said we need to have self-discipline, determination and decisiveness. Qualities that are always key ingredients for success in any endeavors in life and also in our financial life.

Mr Colayco also emphasized the need to increase our financial and investing intelligence. We all need  to increase our financial IQ, and also to learn the basics of investing. Many people make investing issue appear complicated, but it is easy and we should not be intimidated by it. We just have to learn the basic and gradually increase our understanding of it. If we have high financial and investing IQ and know when and how to invest in the right instruments, we can take advantage of different investment opportunities available. That way we can build and accumulate wealth much faster.

To know more opportunities how you could increase your financial and investing intelligence, you can turn  to the Colayco Foundation for Education, Inc. Mr Colayco and his team regularly conduct financial education seminars for all Pinoys here in the Philippines and abroad. He conducts both live and online seminars, some are free and others for a small amount. Visit their website to find out more about the financial education and investing programs www.colaycofoundation1.com.
