Cebu City is now ASEAN City of Culture

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Bantayan Island, northern Cebu

Cebu City has received a new designation from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as the first ever ASEAN City of Culture.  The acceptance of the honor will take place on July 15-16, 2011 in a ceremony to be held in Blu Radison Hotel. The ceremony will be attended by His Excellency President Benigno Aquino, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim, and.the ASEAN ministers for culture and the arts and national counterparts.

Cebu was chosen for its strong creative industry like Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January. Cebu is a home to many export companies in the furniture, gifts, toys, and housewares sectors. It is a major tourist destination in the country, next only to Manila, and is very popular for medical tourism.  Cebu together with Manila was nominated in 2008 during the meeting of Association of Southeast Asian Nations Ministers of Culture and the Arts in Myanmar. This new designation will give Cebu more international exposure and likely to attract more international tourists in the future.

I moved to Cebu in 2009 from Manila because of work and I am enjoying every bit of my experience.  Everything is within reach, allowing me to enjoy both the thrills and frills of a city life and the countryside. Cebu has almost everything a big city like Manila can offer, but without the pollution! Cebu has excellent beaches, resorts and 3-5 star hotels. Life is much simpler and less stressful. More than that, the cost of living is much cheaper. That explains why Cebu is an attractive destination for tourists and an ideal retirement place especially for foreigners. They can spread their retirement savings, spend less and yet can live quietly and comfortably. Expat community in Cebu, mostly retirees, is thriving.

Come to Cebu, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the Cebuanos!

Best Business and Personal Development Books to Read (Part 2)

Sunday, July 10, 2011

This is a sequel to my previous post about best business and personal development books I've read. I consider these books very precious and empowering that is why I am sharing it with you. They have made a significant impact on me and I encourage you to try to read them too.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Rich Dad, Poor Dad is an international bestseller and one of the longest best sellers in New York Times history.   I was stunned by many of the statements and principles explained in the book the first time I read it. It is the best financial education book I've read and that every one should also read especially those who desire to create wealth and achieve financial freedom. After reading Rich Dad Poor Dad, I have become an avid supporter of Robert Kiyosaki and have bought and read many of his books. I have really profited from his instructions and has helped me increased my financial understanding.

How To Win Friends and Influence PeopleHow To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie published in 1936. This is one of the best self-help classic books I've read. This was written during the Great Depression and was primarily intended for sales people. However, the principles outlined in the book is just as  useful today. The advices are sound, but are not always easy to do. The application of the advices is always a challenge. Personally, I am not good at making instant friends. Some people look at me as a bit "snobbish", but I am a down to earth person in reality. By being conscious about it and constantly applying the principles in the book, I am gaining more and more friends which help me in my personal and professional activities.

The Go Getter - Peter KyneThe Go Getter by Peter Kyne was written in the 1920s but the business principles contained in the book are never outdated. It is a very short book and very easy to read.  The story of a war veteran is very inspiring. The lessons will stay with you, inspire you and will help you to succeed at anything you set your hands to do. It is a must read for today's sales professionals and entrepreneurs.

As John Ruskin said, "A book worth reading is worth buying." So please check them out and may these books help and inspire you as much as it has inspired me. Please feel free to share your learning, experiences and successes. :)

Do you like to read books? Well, I do read a lot of books and mostly these are business-related and self-development books.  Reading good books is part of our learning and professional development, and a habit that  wealthy and successful people have. I'd like to share with you some of the books I've read, books that are highly recommended by experts. I read most of these books, but I also need to finish a few others yet. Please check them out; it could be what you need to take your performance to the next level.:)

The Law of Success In Sixteen Lessons by Napoleon HillThe Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons by Napoleon Hill book is a product of Napoleon Hill's 20-year research involving 500 most wealthiest and most successful self-made men and women  in America. The results of his research was summarized in 16 lessons of philosophy of success. The book was contained in 4 volumes with 1,100 pages and was first published in 1925. The Law of Success will really do a 180 on your life. Watch the video to see what it is worth. It is available in Amazon bookstore.

Think and Grow Rich is another book of Napoleon Hill that unveils the secrets to wealth creation. It is based on his first book, The Law of Success. The book will teach you the WHAT and HOW to make a fortune. It is equally important book, and if you will master the techniques in Think and Grow Rich, you will find it easy to achieve whatever you want in life.

The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz. You become what you think about. If you think small, you will remain small. The Magic of Thinking Big teaches the importance of having the correct state of mind, a success conscious mind. It will help you to change your thinking patterns to get the things you want in life. It is recommended for anyone who definitely wants to improve his condition and do much better in life. The main idea of the book is powerfully summed up in the last part, "A wise man will be a master of his mind. A fool will be its slave."

The Magic of Believing by Claude M. Bristol. The Magic of Believing book explains that our "thoughts attract that which it is directed." Written in 1948, it is the story of Claude Bristol which shows the power of belief. Rich in real life examples anecdotes, it explains how the power of belief transformed his life from a life of failure and mediocrity to a life of success. It will teach you a system through the unlimited power of your subconscious mind how you can get anything in life. The Magic of Believing is perfect for anyone who desires more in life!

See You at the Top: 25th Anniversary EditionSee You at the Top: 25th Anniversary Edition by Zag Ziglar. This is the first book written by Zag Ziglar in 1975. See You at the Top, just like the other books above, emphasizes the power of right thinking.  It teaches the step by step instructions how you can change your thinking patterns about yourself and life events. You can hardly expect something different will happen in your life in the future unless you change your thinking now and begin to do something about it.  This is a must read for selling professionals, entrepreneurs and marketers who want to earn more!

That's for now. I'l share with you more of these books in my next post. :)

Secrets to Wealth Creation

Saturday, July 2, 2011

I attended a seminar recently on secrets to wealth creation and it was a joy to be with a select group of highly successful people. The seminar talked about the twenty-five (25) secrets to wealth creation and the key principles behind creating wealth. It was very informative and the success stories of some featured individuals who live by those principles have been very inspiring. I have profited so much from it, so I thought it would be great to share some of the secrets to creating wealth with you. These secrets have been mastered by the rich people. They are very practical and you might benefit from it as well. Here are some of the secrets to wealth creation presented during the seminar in no particular order:

A Definite Purpose or Goal. Having a definite purpose, aim or goal is an important principle to wealth creation. It is not only important for business but also for your personal life. You need to clearly define your financial dreams, and this includes determining exactly how much money you want to earn, what you intend to give in return for money you desire, when do you want to achieve it and the means by which to achieve it. It is always easy to make decisions and focus your energies once you know what your definite purpose is.

Think and Grow RichBurning Desire. To create wealth, you must have a burning desire or an obsession and you must act on it. Having a definite goal and a desire won't make you rich, unless you act on it. A desire is not enough; it must be a burning desire that it becomes an obsession on your part. This is the Law of Success so powerfully explained in the classic personal development book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. You must have a state of mind that is success conscious and not failure conscious. A mind that does not succumb to temporary failures. If you know what you want in quantifiable terms and have a burning desire for it, you can easily create wealth and achieve financial success. To know more about the Law of Success, I encourage you to read Think and Grow Rich book.

Habit of Savings. You know the value of savings, right? One piece of advice you normally hear from other people is to live within your means. Well, this is false. If you live within your means, chances are you will have very little money to save, or worst, you have nothing to save. The right principle is to live below your means. Pay yourself first. It was recommended by the speaker to save at least 10% of your income on a regular basis. But you should aim to set aside more than 20% of your income consistently. Adam Khoo, a Singaporean self-made millionaire at the age of 26, admitted he saved 60-80% of his income. He is a guy who was at the bottom of his class, kicked out of school and yet somehow he made his first one million at just age 26! Amazing, right? Adam Khoo shared his story and success formula in his e-book, Secrets of Self-Made Millionaire. You've got to read his story for yourself, and be inspired!!! If you have not been saving regularly, it is not too late to start again. Financially successful people do save, and they do it consistently.

Get Out of Debt. Another key secret to wealth creation is to get out of debt. Debt has many serious consequences like bankruptcies, foreclosures, etc. Debt can even have an ill effect on your health and can rob you of  the joys of everyday living. There is good and bad debt. A good debt is an investment that creates value and lets you to make more money, while a bad debt takes money out of your pocket. Debt per se is not necessarily a bad thing. But you should not let it take control of you and your life.

Increase Your Income. Very important to wealth creation is to increase your income. One fastest way to increase your income is to reduce your spending especially on unnecessary expense items. You can find ways to reduce your tax payments (ooops without violating the law), reduce your debt and interest payments. You can also tap into different sources of income so you can have multiple sources of income. Some specific ways to increase your income include:
  • working online as a virtual assistant. I personally do this, and I earn extra income as a virtual assistant and I enjoy it too!
  • selling on e-bay, etc. You can sell anything in the Internet
  • trading in stocks. This is the buying and selling of stocks to make quick money gains.
  • investing in equities. Gains here can take months or years
  • investing in real estate, and
  • participating in multilevel network marketing (MLM) business

Other People's Money (OPM).  Other People's Money is the principle of leverage. OPM is very important when it comes to money, business and wealth creation. OPM is using other people's money and making it work for us to accelerate our financial goals. It's not easy to create wealth on our own. If we rely solely on our own capability to save money, it will take us years before we can invest and accumulate wealth. We can take advantage of the power of OPM principle to create wealth. When you apply this effectively, you can earn more with little effort and get ahead financially in life.

Good Priority Management. Good (self) management skills is important to wealth creation. You need to develop essential skills to help improve your performance and in your ability to create wealth. You need to learn how to control your time and get your priorities right.

Always Improve Yourself by Education. Self development is a life-long process. To maximize the power of leverage to work for us, it's important that we learn to invest in ourselves to help us perform at our best. We can read good books, attend seminars, listen to informational CD/audio, network with like-minded people and associate ourselves with winners. We need to constantly expand our knowledge and develop our skills. According to Benjamin Franklin, "An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."
